Summary

The PRIN 2026 programme (Progetti di Ricerca di Rilevante Interesse Nazionale) is aimed at financing fundamental research projects in order to strengthen the national research system and promote interactions between universities, public research institutions, and AFAM institutions.

The programme supports collaborative, territorially distributed research through consortia projects selected based on scientific quality, feasibility, and overall coherence of the research groups.

Projects are triennial and must involve multiple research units (minimum four, maximum six) from different institutions. Each project must request funding between €1,000,000 and €1,200,000.

Eligible beneficiaries include Italian universities, public research bodies supervised by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR), and AFAM institutions. The programme funds 100% of eligible project costs (with specific exclusions for certain personnel costs).

The total available budget for PRIN 2026 is €259,889,354, distributed across ERC macro-sectors (Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Engineering, Social Sciences and Humanities).
